The National Peanut Board, in conjunction with the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) Foundational and Applied Science Program and USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) is calling for research grant applications for the following topic:
Collaborative Effort for Marker Discovery for Improved Peanut Cultivars
Identify genetic markers to develop improved cultivars and breeding lines of peanuts with superior disease and nematode resistance, drought tolerance, desirable flavor characteristics, increased shelf life, better nutritional qualities, preferred size and shape to facilitate processing, and other desirable traits. The research should leverage the success in sequencing and mapping the peanut genome, the core collection, wild species outside the core collection and introgression lines, and will support improvement of peanut cultivars through conventional breeding methods using marker-assisted selection.
Call for Request for Applications (RFAs) – Application deadline is July 25, 2018.
All applicants should contact the National Peanut Board’s representative Ms. DeMarquine Wilson (678) 424-5750 or firstname.lastname@example.org. Applicants will contact Ms. DeMarquine Wilson to share a copy of their proposal when requesting a letter of support. Due to privacy rules, applicants need to contact AFRI (email@example.com) to get a copy of their submitted application before sending to the National Peanut Board’s representative.
U.S. peanuts farmers can expect a “paradigm shift” in peanut production within a few years when breeders begin taking advantage of a new tool to select for improved traits in new varieties.
