Peanut-based foods save lives. This is the American Peanut Council’s message when promoting ready-to-use therapeutic foods for use in the developing world.
In 2022, videos developed in Ghana communicate the nutritional benefits of peanuts and provide information on the value of partnerships in developing peanut-based foods. Market Access Program funds were used to develop the videos. The research described in the videos was paid for with a mix of funds from the U.S. Agency for International Development and the private sector.
U.S. peanuts are used to produce peanut-based foods in two factories: one in rural Fitzgerald, Ga. and one in North Kingstown, R.I. In addition to producing products made with U.S.-sourced ingredients, both facilities provide jobs in underserved locations. The U.S. government and U.N. agencies UNICEF and the World Food Programme are the primary buyers of ready-to-use therapeutic foods.
